About the Stroud Water Research Center
Through research, education and public outreach, the Stroud Water Research
Center seeks to advance our global knowledge and stewardship of fresh water
systems to enable its peers in the scientific and educational communities, as
well as businesses, landowners, policy makers and individuals, to make informed
decisions that affect water quality and availability around the world. Stroud
Water Research Center is an independent, not-for-profit organization with
501(c)(3) status.

- May 5, 2008:
Bernard Sweeney, Ph.D., Director of Stroud Water Research Center, will
present at the May 15th event, “Taking Stock of New York City’s Drinking
Water,” hosted by the New York Academy of Sciences.
- April 10, 2008:
Stroud Water Research Center to host the nationally acclaimed Wild & Scenic™ Environmental Film Festival on May 1st, 2008.
- April 4, 2008:
Stroud Water Research Center and community members to plant 500
trees Dansko Co. employees, directed by Eagle Scout candidate Nick Parrotta,
will join the Stroud Water Research Center in planting 500 trees on the White
Clay Creek, as part of an on-going scientific research project and a
TreeVitalize program to restore trees to Southeastern Pennsylvania on April 18,
2008.

Executive Director of EcoVillage at Ithaca (EVI) to speak at the Stroud
Water Research Center’s Joan & Dick Stroud Memorial Lecture Series on April
3rd, 2008.

"Mountaintop to Tap": Following New York City's drinking water from source to
tap
In July 2007, twelve high school students from
the New York Harbor School in Brooklyn and Sidney High School in Delaware
County embarked on a "Mountaintop to Tap" trek, tracing New York City's
drinking water supply from the Catskill Mountains to New York City. During
the more than 200-mile journey, the students measured the water quality of
streams, rivers and reservoirs; talked to public officials; and shared with
the public what they learned. See release for related photography exhibition and documentary premiere

First National Bank
of Chester County contributes $5,000 for educational programs
The Stroud Center’s education department will use the EITC funding to
provide free teacher-training workshops and student programs to regional
school districts whose budgets might not otherwise be able to offer the
innovative educational programs in support of their regular curricula.

Pioneering the science of water for 40 years: Stroud Center celebrates
milestone anniversary
On September 22, scientists, staff, educators, board members and friends of
the Stroud Water Research Center will celebrate the achievements of the organization,
gathering along the banks of the stream where they first began their work 40
years ago.
- April 16, 2007:
Stroud Water Research Center names new Education Director
Dr. Susan E. Gill has been named the Stroud Water Research Center’s new
Director of Education. She says her mission is to expand the Center’s
excellent educational programs and attract new audiences while “making
science accessible in a way that maintains its integrity.”
- August 25, 2006:
Tioga County EPA
grant to study effects of acid mine drainage U.S. Rep. John E.
Peterson (PA-05) announced today that $100,000 in federal grant money has
been set aside by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the purpose
of investigating the relationship between acid mine drainage and the ability
to process nitrogen and other nutrients in several streams in Tioga County.

Sweeney honored with
Garden Club of America Award Dr. Bern Sweeney, Director of the
Stroud Water Research Center, was presented with the Margaret Douglas Medal
by the Garden Club of America at their annual awards banquet in Denver,
Colorado, on Tuesday, May 23.
- May 2, 2006:
Stroud Center Director
Receives Lifetime Achievement Award Dr. Bern Sweeney, Director of
the Stroud Water Research Center, was presented the Lifetime Achievement
Award from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation for his outstanding contribution to
the environmental field.

- April 6, 2005:
Stroud
Water Research Center Achieves Kresge Foundation Science Initiative
Challenge Grant The Stroud Water Research Center achieved the
Kresge Challenge and raised $1 million to endow equipment and instruments at
the Center.
- September 15, 2004:
Research Uncovers Added Value of Streamside Forests A team of
researchers led by scientists from the Stroud Water Research Center in
Avondale, Pa., has discovered that streamside (or riparian) forests play a
critical – and previously unacknowledged – role in protecting the world’s
fresh water.
