Weather: Still super HOT!

We had two thunderstorms last night. It is good that it happened this early in our trek because we found out what tents still needed some waterproofing before we head into the backcountry. This morning Ranger Ken Gierloff from NY State Dept. of Environmental Conservation visited with us. He dropped off our backcountry permit and he also orienteed us to backcountry safety and he gave us a good idea of what to expect. He taught us the S.T.O.P. method, told us to drinks LOTS of water and to always have a whistle with us when we go hiking. He also informed us of how to avoid the black bears in these woods and poison ivy, wild parsnip and Chinese hogwood (the later two are plants that cause a skin reaction similar to poison ivy). After Ranger Kens presentation we got to meet Assemblyman Mr. Clifford Crouch from the 107th District (Delaware County). Did you know that 85% of Delaware County is designated as part of the NYC watershed? And did you also know that NYC has some of the cleanest, most pristine water in the world? The trees in the Catskills are doing one HUGE job - keeping NYCs drinking water clean!
