Next Upstream Festival
"Wonderful Lives ... Whirlygigs, Stinkpots, Peepers and more
Anticipation is already building among the organizers of the Stroud Center's spring 2002 Upstream Festival on April 27. This is evident in the theme they have chosen, "Wonderful Lives: Whirlygigs, Stinkpots, Peepers and more" and the new events they have planned. The date of this annual celebration of Earth, nature and the White Clay Creek watershed is Saturday, April 27, 2002.
In planning the events the organizers have built on the success of the past together with some fresh new ideas.
In addition to the music, the plant sale, native plant walks, a book sale, various crafts, lab tours and more, the organizers are considering birding sojourns and several well-known storytellers to regale the crowds with Lenape folk tales. Kite making and flying are also being considered.
New co-chairs, Julia Loving and Diane Belnavis, are heading the organizing committee of Claire Birney, Kay Dixon, Jim McGonigle, Carol Urbanc and Fred Wanner.
The founding co-chairs, Jessie Farrell and Claire Murray, have stepped down after five years of organizing the increasingly popular event. They will, however, be available as consultants to the new committee.
Ms. Loving said she feels it is a daunting task to fill the shoes of the founders and their wonderful vision. But she is confident that next year's festival will live up to its reputation as the premier Earth Day event of the area.
"The Stroud Center is such an extraordinary presence in our community, I am in awe of their work and their extensive educational outreach," she said. "It's an honor to be collaborating with the Center on this festival."
